API 607 — Fire Test for Quarter-turn Valves and Valves with Nonmetallic Seats
What "fire-safe" actually means, and why it is a tested performance rather than a material claim.
API 607 defines a fire test in which a soft-seated valve is burned at a controlled temperature while pressurised, then cooled and re-pressurised. The acceptance criteria limit external leakage, seat leakage through the burned seat, and operability. The point is not that the valve survives undamaged — it is that the valve still isolates after the soft seat is gone.
Fire-safe construction therefore depends on the secondary metal-to-metal seat: the moment the polymer seat degrades, the ball or disc must seat against a metal insert that was machined into the body. This is a design decision, not a coating.
We supply fire-safe tested ball valves and metal-seated butterfly valves to API 607, with the fire test report and witness option available. For hydrocarbon service where a piping class specifies fire-safe, ask us for the report against the size and class you are buying.
Coverage
- Applies to quarter-turn and nonmetallic-seated valves
- Controlled burn, pressurised, then re-pressurisation test
- Limits on external and seat leakage after fire exposure
- Requires a secondary metal-to-metal seat
- Test report and third-party witness available

We check the dimensions, the material and the standard before we price — which is the part that decides whether the valve actually fits. RFQ answered within one working day.
